'Shadowhunters': Freeform Clarifies Release Date of Final Episodes

Tuesday, 26 June 2018

Fans of Freeform's Shadowhunters have a bit of a wait for the second half of the third and final season of the series.

TV Line reports that, according to Freeform, the final episodes of Shadowhunters will not air until sometime in Spring 2019. This update clarifies a mid-August date that had been circulating for the premiere of Season 3B.

This news may be a little disappointing for fans as the series went on midseason hiatus back in May. The series' second season had a three-month break between the first and second halves, but with a Spring 2019 date they could be waiting almost a year to find out not only what comes next in Season 3, but how the series will close out. While no reason was given for the delay between season halves, it's likely that it's to allow the show time to work out how they want to wrap up the show.

It was announced earlier this month that Shadowhunters would be ending its run after three seasons. While the fan has a devoted fan base and the network indicated that they have been pleased with the show creatively, the decision to cancel it came down to economic reasons. Constantin Film, which co-produces Shadowhunters with Freeform, lost their output deal with Netflix and had asked Freeform for an increased investment, something that the network just couldn't make work.

"We went back and forth with them but ultimately we just couldn't make the economics work," network EVP of Programming and Development Karey Burke told Deadline. "We were very happy creatively with it."

As Constantin Film lost the deal with Netflix, Shadowhunters was pulled form that streaming service but has been available on Hulu, though recently information was released that indicated that Season 3A of the series would be leaving the streaming service early -- before Season 3B even debuted. However, TV Line confirmed that that was an error and that Season 3A is not leaving Hulu at this time.

However, even with the promise of a proper series wrap-up on Freeform, fans of the series aren't giving up on the hope of saving the show. Fans have been vocal online with a "#SaveShadowhunters" social media campaign as well as a charity fundraiser to help convince another network or streaming service to pick up the show. While, thus far, there's been no news of anyone interested in picking up Shadowhunters, series star Katherine McNamara told fans at Oz Comic-Con that when the show does return for its final episodes, they will be "amazing".

"If the [hashtags] make a difference, amazing, if not, we've got 10 more amazing episodes and we're going to shoot the most kick-ss finale you've ever seen," McNamara said.

'Shadowhunters' Fans Have Raised Over $9K and Collected Over 110K Signatures to Save the Show

Thursday, 14 June 2018

Last week, Freeform cancelled Shadowhunters after just three seasons much to the shock and disappointment of fans. Now, fans have gathered signatures in an attempt to save the series and are raising money for charity in its name.

A petition on Change.org urging that fans speak out and get Freeform -- or another network or streaming service -- to save the series has hit over 110,000 signatures in just over a week. The petition's creator wrote on its page that fans need to not just sign the petition but take it to social media as well. You can read the description below.

Shadowhunters just got announced that its being canceled please please PLEASE if you have any love for this show sign this petition make it known retweet it share it on Facebook snap Instagram do whatever you have to do to make this petition known I will not rest until my show that saved me is saved. It saved me once now it’s time for me to save it please help me do that.

It's not just social media campaigns and petitions, either. Fans have also started a charity campaign benefitting The Trevor Project, an organization devoted to providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention to LGBTQ youth. As of the time of this article, the fundraiser has reached just over $9,000 in donations.

"Currently fans are working hard on a #SaveShadowhunters campaign, but we thought it would be useful to channel some of our passion and frustration to raise awareness and also showcase the generosity of the Shadowhunters fandom," the fundraiser's description reads. "Let's show off the power of our fandom to do good."

The show is currently on mid-season hiatus in year three and when the show returns, it will end with a 12-episode wrap-up. Freeform is giving the series a two-hour finale to close out the fan-beloved series and, according to the network, the decision to cancel the series had nothing to do with ratings. Instead, Programming and Development EVP Karey Burke said last week that Shadowhunters cancellation was an unfortunate result of a strategic shift at Freeform that ultimately hit the economics of the series.

Burke explained that Freeform had shifted towards ordering shows in smaller batches, a decision that resulted in the end of a Netflix output deal with Constantin Film, the network's co-production partner. Without Netflix's investment, Constantin looked to Freeform for more money, something they couldn't make work.

"We went back and forth with them, but ultimately we just couldn't make the economics work," Burke said. "We were very happy creatively with it."

Despite fan efforts to save the show, thus far there's been no news of another network or streaming service showing interested in the series. However, series star Katherine McNamara told fans at Oz Comic-Con in Melbourne last weekend that there are still those final episodes to look forward to and that they would be the "amazing".

"If the [hashtags] make a difference, amazing, if not, we've got 10 more amazing episodes and we're going to shoot the most kick-ss finale you've ever seen," McNamara said.

Shadowhunters star Katherine McNamara opens up about a possible revival following axing and fan outcry

Monday, 11 June 2018

Fans of the Mortal Instruments TV adaptation Shadowhunters were devastated last week when it was announced that the show would end after the completion of its third and current season.

These last few weeks have seen the miraculous un-cancellations of both Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Expanse, thanks to other content providers jumping in and snapping up the rights. Lucifer's leading man Tom Ellis has also revealed there have been 'talks' to save that show, so could the same thing happen here?

Star Katherine McNamara sure hopes so. The Clary Fray actress apparently told fans at Melbourne's Oz Comic-con that she has her fingers crossed another network picks the show up.

"I would love that!" she is quoted as saying. "I love the show and I would love to finish it out. Hopefully your tweets will encourage something to happen.

"If [the hashtags] make a difference, amazing. If not, we've got 10 more amazing episodes in the can and we're gonna shoot the most kickass finale you've ever seen."

Karey Burke, EVP of Programming and Development for Freeform, explained the cancellation by saying: "We went back and forth with (production company Constantin Film) but ultimately we just couldn't make the economics work.

"We were very happy creatively with it."

Shadowhunters will return in 2019 with 12 episodes left to air and a two-episode special finale. Netflix airs the show in the UK.

‘Shadowhunters’ Canceled by Freeform

Friday, 8 June 2018

Freeform has canceled supernatural drama series “Shadowhunters.” The show will end with a special two-hour final at the close of the upcoming second half of season three.

“We are very proud of ‘Shadowhunters,’ a series that broke new ground in the genre world and became a fan favorite,” the network said in a statement. “However, along with our partners at Constantin, we reached the very difficult decision not to renew the show for a fourth season. But as big supporters and fans ourselves, Freeform insisted on and championed the filming of a special two-part finale that would give devoted fans a proper ending. The twelve episodes will air in spring of 2019. We want to thank our talented creators, producers, cast and crew along with our colleagues at Constantin for their hard work and dedication and to Cassie Clare for her incredible book series. We look forward to the final chapter of this breakthrough drama.”

“Shadowhunters” is produced by Constantin Films. Todd Slavkin, Darren Swimmer, McG, Matt Hastings, Mary Viola, Martin Moszkowicz and Robert Kulzer serve as executive producers. The second half of the show’s third and final season — which will consist of 12 all-new episodes — is slated to premiere in spring 2019
